Bob Dylan Biography
Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter who has been a major figure in popular music for more than 50 years. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when his songs chronicled the social and political turmoil of the era. Dylan has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
Dylan was born Robert Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota. He began playing guitar and writing songs as a teenager, and he moved to New York City in 1961 to pursue a career in music. Dylan's early albums, such as The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963) and The Times They Are a-Changin' (1964), were heavily influenced by folk music and protest songs. However, Dylan's music soon became more experimental, and he began to incorporate elements of rock, blues, and country into his songs.
In the late 1960s, Dylan became increasingly involved in political activism. He supported the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement, and he wrote several songs that became anthems for the counterculture. Dylan's music continued to evolve in the 1970s and 1980s, and he released a number of critically acclaimed albums, including Blood on the Tracks (1975), Desire (1976), and Oh Mercy (1989).
In 2016, Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his "extraordinary poetic achievement in the great American song tradition." He is the first musician to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
