Four birdies on the front nine have put Horschel in contention at The Open

American Billy Horschel will have a large contingent of fans cheering him on at The Open this weekend, as he targets a first major championship victory.

Horschel, who is a keen supporter of West Ham United, is in contention heading into the final two rounds at Royal Liverpool after a fine display on day two.

The 36-year-old carded a second-round 68 to sit just two shots behind leader Rory McIlroy.

Horschel had four birdies on the front nine, and despite dropping shots on the 10th and 13th, he scrambled for pars on the back nine to remain in the hunt.

The American has been in good form this season, with two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour.

He will be hoping to continue his good form and add a major championship to his resume.
