The grandfather of an 18-month-old girl who fell to her death from an open window on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in July 2019 has been charged with negligent homicide.

The grandfather, Salvatore Anello, was with his granddaughter, Chloe Wiegand, when she fell from the 11th-floor window of the Freedom of the Seas ship while it was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Anello has pleaded not guilty to the charge. His trial is scheduled to begin in October.

The lawsuit alleges that Royal Caribbean was negligent in failing to prevent the child's death. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Royal Caribbean has denied any wrongdoing.

The company said in a statement that it is "deeply saddened by this tragic incident" and that it is "committed to the safety of our guests."

The company said it has "taken steps to enhance safety measures on our ships" since the incident.
